Local residents in Solihull, were consulted on the design details for HS2’s Balsall Common viaduct. A majority of 73% of the votes chose a high gloss polished viaduct. More details below.
JLR were initially contacted by the HS2 project, to see if polished concrete would be a viable option for the viaduct parapets. After many initial phone calls meetings and the grinding & polishing of samples of the parapets, it was decided that a full aggregate, high gloss finish would be best suited to compliment the architects design and fit in with the surrounding countryside. JLR Contracts were chosen as the sole contractor to grind and polish the parapets, which would all join together to form the viaduct. The innovative polished concrete parapets are designed to allow the colour of the sky, different lighting conditions,
and taller local vegetation etc. to be reflected back to the viewer.
The parapets firstly received a coarse grind to reveal all the aggregate and then went through the full honing,
chemical stages, and polishing process, to get the required result of full aggregate and high gloss finish.
This project is now ongoing but were sure at JLR that the viaduct will be a stunning feature once in situ.
