Remove delamination and re-profile surface, Port of Tyne, South Shields.

JLR Contracts were contacted, by the client who we had previously worked for, to find a solution to the delamination problem within the service yard of an industrial facility in the Port of Tyne, South Shields. There were numerous separate concrete slabs, which had been poured and then had a brush finish applied, to make them anti-slip. Unfortunately, some of the slabs had started to delaminate. The loose concrete surface was a bit of an eye sore, but more importantly, the issue could become a danger, when large trucks were braking on it, causing them to skid. Removing the slabs was not an option as well as being very expensive, the new facility had to be up and running within a tight timeframe, which would not allow for the pouring of new concrete slabs. JLR came up with the solution of firstly completely removing the delamination from the surface of the affected slabs by diamond grinding. The concrete surface of the slabs would then be re-profiled with a heavy duty TCT scabbler which would re-manufacture the anti-slip grooves required for the surface. We firstly carried out a small test patch of approx. 20m² to the worst affected area, to see if the result would be acceptable to the client. The client was delighted with the result. We then proceeded to carry out the works to all the affected slabs, which amounted to over several hundred metres. The works were completed within in budget and within the timescale of one week as agreed.
